Johanna Hynes is a New England-based yoga teacher who splits her time between Boston and Edgartown. Johanna’s teaching style is modern and inventive, yet well rooted in tradition. Her main objective when sequencing a class is that it resonate on a physical, energetic and mental level for the student.
Johanna began teaching yoga in 2003 at a small studio in Martha’s Vineyard. She moved to Charlestown soon after and became a devoted student of Patricia Walden and Barbara Benagh.
As a new teacher, Johanna spent most of her time working for various studio owners throughout Boston yet maintained a strong connection to the community of students in her close-knit neighborhood.
In 2012, Johanna launched The Yoga Room, a unique setting in the heart of Charlestown, which offered several classes a day. When it became clear that the size of the studio was no longer sufficient for its growing student body, The Yoga Room closed to make space for a new venture, ASANA of which Johanna is a co-founder.
Johanna has completed teacher trainings led by David Life and Sharon Gannon of Jivamukti Yoga, Larry Shultz of Its Yoga, and is currently enrolled in Benagh’s advanced 500-hour program.
Early on in her practice, Johanna understood the importance of forging a relationship with a primary teacher, but it wasn’t until she spent several years learning from Benagh that she knew she’d found her mentor.
Johanna’s teaching style reflects her commitment to self-study and a desire to serve others. Her classes are thought provoking, accessible, and inspired by what she has experienced as a student on the mat and as a human being in the world. When she is not practicing or teaching yoga she is attempting to make more conscious transitions throughout the day.
Johanna loves to spend time with her family, visit new places, make cookies, run in the open air, swim in the ocean and ski in the trees.
Known for her rhythmic deliberate flows, Johanna’s repertoire ranges from classes that are challenging and nuanced for the seasoned student to those that are practical and accessible for the beginner.
